Credential in Bilbao & other questions

Hi,

We will commence our Camino in Bilbao in July to watch the first 3 stages of TDF while walking - unfortunately means stage 1 is Gernika to Bilbao. Then we head across to Irun to officially start the full Norte. I have a couple of questions. Do you know where we can get a credential in Bilbao? How long does the Gernika to Bilbao stage usually take for the average walker? Also, given the peak period we are walking, we are concerned about accommodation. If we arrive into places around 3pm is the likelihood of getting a cheap bed difficult? Thank you for the advice.

You can take credencial in Bilbao  at  albergue

Albergue La cruz

Also tuesday and thursday  http://www.caminobizkaia.net

Avoid Gernika . Book Pozueta .

From Gernika 30 km , from Pozueta 25 km to Bilbao.  In June no problem , in July  may be full because of TDF . Book in advance

If you come by plane you can take a bus from airport to  San Sebastian, a second bus to Irun.

In Irun there are also credentials .

Thanks carapau for the advice. Why do you say avoid Gernika? We have accommodation booked in Bilbao for the first stage, so we won't be staying there, although will need to get a train to Gernika early in the morning on Saturday 1 July to start walking. If we walk from Pozueta, can you get a train to there from Bilbao and also from Pozueta back to Bilbao?

Can you get credentials in the Bilbao cathedral? If not, we will have to get them at the albergue that you mention.

We will also book in advance given the high period. Zarautz seems to be a town with limited cheap albergues as a few are.closed?

Thanks again.

Gernika it's a nice place to stay , to eat , to visit , to make tourism .Please visit Casa de Juntas , look at the tree . It's important for us . Visit Peace Museum .

IMHO it's not a good place to sleep .

You can   use train or bus to Gernika .  If you book Pozueta  you have to walk 5 km , no public transport .

Buen Camino

Thank you again for the recommendations. I will definitely visit the Casa de Juntas and the Peace Museum.

If there is no public transport in Pozueta, do you know when the next city is along that track (towards Bilbao) where there will be public transport to/from Bilbao?

Is there many hostel options for Zarautz? We have been looking and do not see much in the forums. I have already emailed 1 hostel Musikaplaza and they are full on the day we are walking in July. Would Getaria be a better option? or are we worrying about nothing.

Thanks,

Lyn

Just follow https://www.gronze.com/camino-norte

I know but I don't want to talk about this in public .  For those questions ask please Pozueta management .

This it's just a hobby . It's now my work . I'm not tourist-info.

I spend some days   at Bilbao albergue working in a volunteer way .

It's awful for many that some people uses public transport . It's very awful for all when pilgrims come at 4pm walking from Gernika , maybe at 8pm from Zenarruza and we have to say " we're sorry , no free beds " .

In June normally free beds , in September normally free beds . July during TDC, august in weekends  albergue get no vacancys , no free beds  early .

I'm sorry to be so rude .

King Regards , J

Hi Carapau,

Thank you for the informaiton. I only ask about taking public transport because as I said in my first post we are going to walk Gernika to Bilbao as stage 1, but if it is too long we can catch public transport from Bilbao to a town a bit closer to Bilbao to make the first day walking back into Bilbao easier. We then catch the bus over to Irun and will start walking the rest of the norte to Santiago (minus the part we will walk on day 1).

Your response is not rude, it is very informative and I am very grateful.
