Barcelona to Montserrat in 4 stages?
Hello!
We are 3 female friends planning to do Barcelona to Montserrat in 4 days in July. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We are in good shape, but rather enjoy the way than rush things.
Our thought was Barcelona- Sant Cugat - Ullastrell - Collbató - Montserrat. Another option is Barcelona- Sant Cugat - Terrassa - Collbató - Montserrat.
Is it possible to see the elevation in each stage? How much does the walk to Terrassa add to the trip? Any recommendations on special places to stop for food?
Thanks!

That sounds like a beautiful and rewarding journey! Both routes—from Barcelona to Montserrat via Sant Cugat—offer stunning Catalan landscapes, but the Terrassa route adds about 5–6 km and a bit more elevation compared to going through Ullastrell, making it slightly more demanding. In terms of elevation, the most challenging part is the final stretch from Collbató to Montserrat, which involves a steep climb of around 600 meters over 5–6 km. The route through Ullastrell is more rural and scenic, while the Terrassa option gives you a chance to explore a larger town with more dining and accommodation choices. For food, consider stopping at Can Gula in Sant Cugat for a fresh local meal, or Cal Carter in Mura (a slight detour but worth it if you're up for it). In Terrassa, La Terrassa del Museu is a great spot. Pack water and snacks, especially between Ullastrell and Collbató, where services can be sparse. Take your time, soak in the views, and maybe aim to reach Montserrat early in the day to enjoy the monastery before the crowds.
Thanks for the response, super helpful! Any suggestions on lodging in Ullasttrell? We e-mailed Jordi Sans but yet to hear back. Thanks!
Hello OfriCamino, here Alonso from Terrassa. As mentioned by Indi, in www.gronze.com you can get all the necessary information for reaching Montserrat leaving Barcelona city following the Camino Catalan. Additionally is good to know that the Camino Catalán coincides with the GR6 (Gran Recorrido 6) marked with a red and white line: https://visit.santcugat.cat/es/el-camino-de-santiago-de-barcelona-a-mont...
Last but not least, keep in mind that July is the hottest month of the year in the mediterranean area, that means, temperatures at noon can easily overpass 35ºC , therefore it is very important to planify every leg of your route. In the same way, it could be really dangerous to follow the Camino Catalan from Montserrat to Lleida or somewhere around.
